What is Reiki ?

Reiki comes from the Japanese words "Rei" which means Universal and "ki" Life Force Energy. It is also known as Qi or Chi to the Chinese, Prana to the Yogis and Huna to the Hawaiians, etc. Reiki is the energy that permeates all animate and inanimate objects. To some, Reiki is regarded as the Highest Unconditional Love or God's Energy.

Reiki is a gentle hands-on natural healing therapy that is both non-invasive and safe. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is neither a religion nor a cult. In a multi-racial society where I come from, we have taught hundreds of people from different faiths or belief systems. Through referrals from students and satisfied clients, we have even taught Reiki to foreign visitors to our country. Anyone can receive the healing energy of Reiki or learn it as long as One is willing to accept it. You do not need to believe in Reiki for it to work.

As the Reiki energy is guided by a Higher Intelligence, it goes to the source of the problem and response positively as needed. There is no need to diagnose and attempt to push the energy through. Once attuned by a qualified Reiki Master, a Reiki practitioner will be able to make available the Reiki energy for the client to draw as much as needed for healing purpose. Each time a therapy is performed, the practitioner also gets a treatment. It is not surprising to find Reiki practitioners becoming more energised and healthier after treating others. Reiki is known to improve and heal on the challenges at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

What is the history of Reiki?

Dr Mikao Usui journeyed to Mount Kurama in 1922. He went to Mount Kurama with intention to fast and meditate for 21 days. He used 21 stones to count the days. On the 21st day at the break of dawn, he threw away the last stone and exclaimed "Well, either I get the answer today or I do not". Suddenly on the horizon he saw a ball of light coming towards him. For a moment he thought of getting out of the way of the ball of light in case it might kill him. On second thought, it might just be the answer for him, allowing it to hit him straight in the face. He fainted and when he awoke, he saw colourful bubbles of the rainbow colours with the Reiki symbols and answers he was seeking for. It was said to be that he was naturally attuned by the Universe.

While the Reiki practice as developed and taught by Dr Usui has its roots in Japan, it remained a very close-up society with memberships only open to those with strong recommendations. It is widely acknowledged that
Mrs Takata, an American of Japanese origin from Hawaii was primarily responsible for bringing the practice out of Japan to the West which eventually spread to the rest of the world through her lineage.
